Data we collect
We collect the phone number you sign up with, and optionally an email address if you add one. We collect your profile details such as name, username, date of birth, photo, and bio. We collect your approximate location when you open the map or check in to a geo gated event, and only while the app is open. We collect the photos, videos, and audio you choose to capture or upload, including camera and microphone recordings you make for stories, memories, voice messages, and voice or video calls. We collect the content you write, such as posts, comments, and messages. We collect usage data such as the events you view, RSVP to, save, and attend, the searches you run, and basic device information including a push notification token and app version.
Camera, microphone, and photos
The camera and microphone are used only while you are actively using a feature that needs them: capturing a story or memory, recording a voice message, or joining a voice or video call. We never record in the background. Photo library access is used to let you pick media to upload and, when you tap save, to write a photo or video you captured back to your own library. You can withdraw any of these permissions at any time in your device settings, and the rest of the app keeps working.
How we use your data
We use your data to run Buttafly: to create and secure your account, show you nearby events and friends on the map, deliver RSVPs, guestlists, and notifications, personalise your feed and recommendations, keep the community safe, and improve the service. We do not use your private messages for advertising.
Advertising
Buttafly shows promoted events and venues from businesses that advertise on the app. Every promoted item is labelled. Advertisers never receive your identity, phone number, or contact details. They see only aggregated performance for their own campaigns, such as how many people saw or tapped an item. Ads are selected using in app signals such as your city, the categories you engage with, and the event you are looking at. We do not track you across other companies apps or websites, we do not use the advertising identifier, and we do not sell your personal data.
AI features
When you use the Buttafly AI assistant, the message you send and the relevant context from your own account, such as your events and guests, are sent to a third party AI provider to generate a response. That provider processes the request on our behalf and is not permitted to use your content to train its models. Do not send information to the assistant that you would not want processed this way. AI features are optional and the rest of the app works without them.
Notifications
If you allow notifications, your device gives us a push token that lets us send alerts to that device. It is tied to your account until you sign out, turn notifications off, or delete the app. You can control which kinds of notification you receive in Settings, and turn them off entirely in your device settings.
SMS verification
Your phone number is used to send one time verification codes by SMS and to secure sign in. SMS delivery is handled by telecom providers acting as processors on our behalf. Your number is never shown publicly on your profile.
Sharing
We share data only with service providers who help us run the app, such as hosting, storage, SMS delivery, and analytics providers, and only as far as needed for them to provide their service. We do not sell your personal data. We may disclose data where the law requires it or to protect the safety of users.
Retention
Chat messages are retained for one year. Photos and media you post are kept for the lifetime of your account, with older media moved to archive storage. If you delete your account there is a 30 day grace period during which you can restore it, after which your data is permanently deleted except where the law requires longer retention.
Your rights
You can access and update your profile at any time in the app. You can request a copy of your data, an export, or the deletion of your account and data by contacting us or using the tools in Settings. We will respond to requests within a reasonable time and in line with applicable law.
Children
Buttafly is not intended for anyone under 17, and we do not knowingly collect data from children. If we learn that an account belongs to someone under the age requirement we will remove it. Contact us if you believe a child is using the service.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the service evolves. If a change is significant we will tell you in the app before it takes effect. The latest version is always available on this screen.
